"It's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can't build my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery and death."

Trip to the Middle East
On February 7-16, 2008, D&A partners Kathy & Sayres Dudley traveled to Dubai UAE and Muscat, Oman at the invitation of their newest client, REO Development. The firm has been selected for a major new assignment, reflected above, and the trip allowed the Dudley’s to see first hand the tremendous growth of two nations in the Middle East, both with a serious business agenda.
Dubai has received significant international exposure in the past five years due to its explosive development in real estate projects which may be unrivaled anywhere else on the planet. Oman, a neighboring country, has elected to modernize at a more calculated pace than Dubai, and is now poised to begin a period of sustained expansion.
The capital city of Muscat is located on the Gulf of Oman, with beautiful beaches surrounded by mountains. The country population is currently at 2.7 million and growing at 2% per annum. Oman has enjoyed a long history of strategic importance in trade and is embarking on a major business expansion which will fuel accelerated growth in their overall economy for at least the next ten years. The Sultan of Oman has determined that his country will benefit from the expertise and resources of outside companies and is now employing a strategy to welcome them to his country.
Like most westerners, the Dudley’s had little or no perception of Oman prior to this visit. They discovered a warm and friendly culture, where Americans and others are welcomed and embraced. In both formal and informal meetings with Americans and other expatriates, they discovered an almost universal opinion that life for them and their families in Muscat is outstanding and desirable. An example was an informal meeting at the American Employee Association Club where they met a young family from Kansas. Both the husband and wife are international teachers in their third year of living in Muscat. They enthusiastically agreed that Oman was a great place to raise their four-year old son.
REO Development, based in Dubai, is establishing a major presence in Oman and has positioned itself as a major player in the future of Oman’s development. The country will be requiring product in all asset classes, not just in Muscat, but in other population centers and along their supply chain routes to the UAE and through their ports. In comparison to Dubai, Oman is a relatively new market, with a limited number of active developers.
It was a delightful but exhausting trip, but we look forward to returning sometime later this year once our assignment is completed.
Have a great week!
